Despite statute. ruling leaves question of billing for paralegal time unclear

The Daily Journal - 10/11/13

By Don J. DeBenedictis

Partner Gerald Knapton was quoted in an article regarding California Business & Professions Code Sections 6450 – 6456, which regulate the paralegal profession. In the article, Knapton discusses what happens when law firms bill for the time of staffers who don’t qualify as paralegals under the statute. He notes that there are “no real teeth out there to enforce” the statute’s certification requirements with regard to billing and that, in general, clients and attorneys can come to whatever agreement they decide is appropriate regarding what is included in bills for attorneys’ fees.
