Client Alert: Mexico's Intellectual Property Office Closed due to COVID-19

3/24/2020

Mexico’s Intellectual Property Office (“IMPI”) closed today, March 24, 2020, due to COVID-19.  One of the immediate effects in the United States is that filings, applications, or registrations could be affected if trademark rights in the United States are dependent on foreign use, like Mezcal and tequila products for example. Proceeding in a way that protects those filings, applications, or registrations and related deadlines during COVID-19 under Mexican law and politics is essential.  The attached Official Statement indicates that IMPI is currently planning on re-opening April 20, 2020.

We will continue to monitor updates from the IMPI, and will share critical changes as they develop.  Our Food, Beverage, & Hospitality team is here to help.  Contact Robert A. Rivas: robert.rivas@rmkb.com or 213-312-2018.
