Kim Karelis

Partner — Los Angeles

Kim Karelis is a partner in the Firm’s Los Angeles office.  He has broad experience regarding legal fee disputes in complex commercial matters and with respect to attorneys retained by insurance companies.  This practice includes analyzing legal fees in connection with contribution actions between insurance carriers, as well as subrogation actions brought by “additional insured” carriers against subcontractors who have not participated in the defense of a developer, which commonly arise in the context of large construction defect lawsuits. He presents CLE seminars for trial attorneys involved in such subrogation actions with a focus on the reasonableness of the fees incurred in defending the developer. Mr. Karelis has also testified as an expert witness in attorney fee litigation, and has qualified as an expert in the federal and state courts, as well as in fee dispute arbitrations.

Mr. Karelis also represents insurance companies in insurance coverage disputes arising from all types of commercial and personal lines policies. This work includes analyzing claims for coverage, issuing coverage opinion letters to insurers and communicating with insureds regarding insurance coverage issues. Mr. Karelis has many years of experience defending and prosecuting lawsuits regarding coverage disputes between insurance companies, as well as coverage litigation between policyholders and insurance companies in the state and federal courts.

Mr. Karelis also has intensive experience in special education law, where he represents students in disputes with local school districts regarding classroom placement and support services that students with disabilities are entitled to receive under both federal and state law. This is a rapidly-expanding practice area because school districts often ignore or misrepresent their legal obligation to provide students with disabilities with a free and appropriate public education (“FAPE”).
