EXPERIENCE

Michael D. Kanach is an Associate at the Redwood City office.  His area of practice is focused on Intellectual Property issues, including patent, trademark, and copyright litigation as well as other matters.  He began working with the intellectual property team at RMKB as a law clerk in 2008 and since passing the Bar in November 2010, he has joined the RMKB firm as an associate.

Mr. Kanach graduated from the University of California, Hastings College of Law in May 2010, with a concentration in Intellectual Property.  He was a founding member and production editor of the Hastings Science and Technology Law Journal.  He was involved in student government and served as the President of the Association of Communication, Sports, & Entertainment Law, where he planned and organized events that brought speakers to campus to discuss recent developments in the law.  His course work focused on intellectual property, entertainment, and business matters, including patents, copyrights, trademark prosecution, trade secrets, cyberlaw, sports law, and venture capital.
 
Michael graduated from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in 2002.  He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Marketing and a minor in Studio Arts, focused on graphic design.  His artwork and creative writing was published in the school journals and presented in installations on campus.  Mr. Kanach was also an Academic All-American and captain of the Georgetown Lacrosse team.  Post college, he continued playing lacrosse, as well as coached and refereed in Virginia and Los Angeles, and continues today in Silicon Valley.
 
Mr. Kanach worked for several years in the sports and entertainment industry prior to entering law school.  He worked in various roles, including sales, marketing, and legal.  The highlights of his experience include performing sales and marketing functions for the Washington Wizards during Michael Jordan’s final year; working at the Staples Center and affiliated venues in Los Angeles; and negotiating and drafting legal contracts for the second largest concert and live entertainment promoter in North America — AEG Live.  
 
He is a member of the California State Bar and United States District Courts for both the Eastern and Central Districts of California.  He is also a member of the San Mateo County Bar Association, California Lawyers for the Arts, and San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association.
