Patrick Smith concentrates his practice in the areas of executive management and professional liability insurance with expertise in coverage determinations, litigation, and dispute resolution. Patrick has provided coverage advice and defended carriers in hundreds of coverage disputes involving directors and officers, employment practices, errors and omissions, cyber, legal practices, financial institutions and other professional liability insurance policies. He also has experience in the drafting of insurance policy language and advising on compliance with insurance regulations.

Patrick has extensive experience in dispute resolution, specializing in early settlement of coverage and liability disputes on behalf of insurance carriers. He has personally settled hundreds of professional liability claims through pre-litigation settlement negotiations and mediation, resolving matters involving malpractice allegations against lawyers, accountants, insurance agents, financial advisors, and securities broker-dealers amongst other professional lines of business. During law school, Patrick was recognized by the New Jersey General Assembly for his efforts assisting pro se litigants through mediation of their employment disputes as a member of the S.D.N.Y. Representation in Mediation Practica at Seton Hall University School of Law.

Prior to joining Ropers, he served as a coverage attorney at an amLaw 100 law firm, specializing in professional liability coverage. Prior to private practice, he worked as in-house claims counsel at AIG and clerked with the Superior Court of New Jersey. While attending law school in the evenings, Patrick served as the chief criminal analyst for the Jersey City Police Department.

Patrick earned his undergraduate degree in National Defense and Internal Terrorism from the University of Connecticut and his law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law. While in law school, he spent a summer abroad at the American University in Cairo, Egypt studying international business law and Islamic jurisprudence. Patrick is admitted to practice in the states of New York and New Jersey.
