EXPERIENCE

Susan H. Handelman specializes in civil appeals in state and federal appeals courts.  As a regular part of her appellate  practice, Ms. Handelman serves as an advisor to trial counsel and their clients regarding preserving and perfecting issues for appeal. She is often retained to monitor high stakes proceedings in anticipation of appeal.  She assists trial counsel with legal issues and participates in the preparation of pre-trial and post-trial motions.

Ms. Handelman’s practice emphasizes appeals and writs arising from a broad spectrum of underlying litigation such as real property, intellectual property, legal and medical malpractice, breach of contract, personal injury, insurance, business, banking, probate and tax litigation.  She has been certified as an appellate specialist by the State Bar of California’s Board of Legal Specialization for approximately twenty years.  She has handled cases in every one of California’s state and federal appellate courts, including the California Supreme Court.

Ms. Handelman is a frequent speaker, has served as a speaker and program chair for Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB) and has been active in judging various appellate advocacy competitions.  She has published articles; including “The Artful Pleading Doctrine” regarding federal jurisdiction, and other articles regarding insurance related issues.  She served four years on the State Bar of California’s Appellate Law Advisory Commission and served a term as Chair of this appellate commission.  She is also a trained mediator for the California Court of Appeal.  Ms. Handelman has for many consecutive years been recognized as a “Super Lawyer” by Northern California Super Lawyers® magazine in the area of appellate law, and featured as a top appellate lawyer in the San Francisco Bay Area in Bay Area Lawyer Magazine.  In 2014 she was designated as one of the top 50 women lawyers in Northern California.

She is a member of the Bar of the United States Supreme Court, the Bar of the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, Second Circuit Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as the State Bar of California and is admitted to the California Federal Trial Courts.  She received her B.A., with honors, from Washington State University and her J.D., with honors, from Golden Gate University.
